NorthStar

How it works

Rankings tell you what's prestigious. We tell you what fits.

NorthStar is a lifestyle-first MBA matching engine. We score programs against your actual life — where you want to live, how much you can spend, what kind of city suits you, and what happens to your visa after you graduate.

Why rankings alone aren't enough

The global MBA rankings — Financial Times, QS, US News — measure research output, alumni salary, and employer reputation. Those things matter. But they say nothing about whether you'll feel safe walking home at night, whether your dietary restrictions are easily managed locally, whether the city's cost of living will drain your savings, or whether the country's post-study visa will let you stay and work after you graduate.

A program ranked #4 globally might be a poor fit for a candidate who prioritises work-life balance, a mid-sized city, and a clear path to permanent residency. A program ranked #38 in a country with strong post-study work rights and a low cost of living might be the better choice for the same person's actual goals.

NorthStar is designed to surface those programs — the ones you wouldn't find by Googling "best MBA rankings" but that, on reflection, align far better with your life.

The process, step by step

01

Tell us about yourself

You complete a short survey covering your background, career ambitions, financial situation, lifestyle priorities, and immigration goals. There are no right or wrong answers — we use your honest preferences, not a polished resume.

02

We score every program against your profile

NorthStar runs your answers through a weighted scoring engine that evaluates each program across five dimensions: lifestyle fit, career outcomes, financial fit, visa & immigration, and academic profile. Programs you'd never have Googled can surface at the top.

03

Review your ranked matches

Your top matches are presented with a plain-English breakdown of why each program ranked where it did. Drill into any result to see tuition, employment rates, class profile, cost of living, and visa pathway details for that city.

04

Compare and shortlist

Add programs to your comparison list to view them side by side. Bookmark the ones worth a deeper look, then bring that shortlist to your research, advisors, or school visits.

What we measure

Every program in our database is evaluated across five scoring dimensions. The weight of each dimension shifts based on what you tell us matters to you.

Lifestyle fit

Safety indices, LGBTQ+ inclusion, climate, cost of living, pollution, public transit, cultural offerings, dietary needs, family support infrastructure.

Career outcomes

Post-MBA employment rates, average salary, top hiring industries and companies, alumni network strength, industry connections.

Financial fit

Annual tuition, average scholarship availability, living costs, your stated budget and scholarship sensitivity.

Visa & immigration

Post-study work visa availability, path to permanent residency, ability to work while studying, visa difficulty relative to your country of origin.

Academic profile

Program rankings (FT, QS, US News), average GMAT, acceptance rates, specialisations, class size, teaching methodology, program duration.
